The International Federation of Social Work global definition of social work states that:
“Social work is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people. Principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversities are central to social work. Underpinned by theories of social work, social sciences, humanities and indigenous knowledge, social work engages people and structures to address life challenges and enhance wellbeing.”
Different Routes into Social Work
If you are interested in starting a career a social work, there are many different routes available to you.
Fast Track Programmes

If you have a 2:1 degree in a different subject, you can apply to complete a fast-track programme to become a social worker.
Step-Up to Social Work
is a 14-month, full-time programme for social work students who are interested in a career in Children’s Services.
Frontline
is a two-year programme for social work students who are interested in a career in Children’s Service
Think Ahead
is an intensive two-year programme for social work students who are interested in a career in Mental Health.
Social Work Degree Apprenticeships

The social work degree apprenticeship is a new and innovative route into becoming a fully qualified social worker whilst gaining valuable on-the-job experience and earning a wage at the same time
